Spring break - Building houses for the needy

Spring break - Building houses for the needy

If the booze and party scene does not appeal to you for a spring break there is another satisfying and fulfilling option for you. To break away from the routine spring break, you can volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a non profit organisation that is founded on the belief that 'everyone on earth deserves a decent place to live'. The organisation was founded for Lucinda by Millard Fuller for his wife. The mission of the organisation is to provide decent homes for low income families all over the world. At present the organisation has successfully provided more than 300,000 homes all over the globe, for families in need.

Students can volunteer either by donating building materials required for the construction or by giving a helping hand in the construction itself. The families have to apply for their houses and are selected by the organisation on the basis of financial needs. The families in need work along with the volunteers in the construction of their house. Families of any race and religion are provided with housing, though the organisation is called a Christian charity.

Habitat for Humanity Location operates in many locations and countries. You can contact the local Habitat for Humanity and volunteer your time. You don't have to be a plumber or a carpenter to volunteer. Volunteers can help through Women build, Youth programs and Global Village programmes run by the organisation. Another point to check out is to find if your local church is tied to the Habitat for Humanity programme. The experience of helping a family in gaining a decent house is extremely satisfying, fulfilling and will leave you humbled. If you find the experience truly satisfying you could volunteer on a regular basis and not only on spring breaks. The experience will also add weight to your resume.

These families are in desperate need for housing, many who have lost their houses due to floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. You can be a part of the force that helps these families achieve their dreams and lead a life of dignity.
