The 'Real World' Back at Home after College

The 'Real World' Back at Home after College

Moving back home after college is thought to be an unnerving experiencing as you have adjusted to a certain style of living, doing things your own way. A definite level of independence has made you mature where the actions, opinions, and decisions are your own with no one interfering with them. After 4 years staying away from home, going back requires a certain adjustment not just with the place but also with your parents and siblings who have missed you for the last so many years. The rules are now not yours but the ones made by the parents taking into consideration the whole family.

Most students go back home to save money until they earn enough to go out on their own. Students take off to dorms around their teens and move back home when they finish their studies in their early 20's. During this gap, they intelligently mature which makes it a tad little easier to adjust back home, otherwise thought as impossible.

While at the dorm, students are taught to do laundry, cooking, etc. on their own with no or little help offered. You have learnt to take care of yourself, which the parents might find difficult to admit. Sit down with your parents and make them understand the changes you have undergone at the dorm, plans of getting a job and meantime what your plans are. Parent rules are sometimes difficult to understand and adjust, but that is something you will have to get used to as they are for your benefit. In addition, it is only until you find a job and move out.

Find a job at the earliest, if that means taking up a small, part-time job. A serious attitude towards finding a job will make your parents realize that they do not have to do everything for you, which will also result in acceptance of your independent behavior.

A few years of working hard at college does not mean taking a huge break afterwards. It means growing into a mature adult to realize new goals of life. A few days off in summer to relax are okay but not certainly a big vacation. Getting back to home from college is a big adjustment but with time and efforts from both sides, it surely is possible.
