Modulating to a Life in a College Dorm

Modulating to a Life in a College Dorm

Spending the few years of life at a College Dorm is a completely new and different experience compared to the one of home. The lack of luxury and security plus the feeling of staying away from loved ones creeps in with an uneasy feeling. However, it does not mean the situation is as disastrous as it sounds. College dorms have both shared and private rooms depending upon space and cost where both of them offer their own advantages and disadvantages.

A private dorm offers the sense of privacy and luxury but also loneliness with the feeling of insecurity as you alone are responsible for your own safety. Students living in a private dorm can request for additional safety gadgets such as door chains, alarms, and locks to secure themselves. As opposed in a shared dorm, a partner is there to make you feel secure.

While living in a College dorm you will have to eat, whatever is there offered on the plate with hundreds of other students. No pampering of home cooked meals or mommas to ask your preferences in food. Nevertheless, one could ask if the colleges allows for cooking appliances like microwaves or families to send home cooked meals.

Along with food and space, comes sharing private spaces like bathrooms and showers with your partner. Your whole day will be spent with students say brushing teeth in the same space-same time. It is an ideal situation if you share a room with only one partner, but there are dorms with a one bathroom for a single floor or a couple of dorms.

Dorms come with rules and regulations specially curfews specifying a time to be in dorm room otherwise resulting in punishment, penalty, or suspension from college. It applies to everyone, treating all as equals. Mature adult college-goers will understand the importance of dorm regulations.

Ask the college if you bring in certain comforts of your home like coffee maker, phone, TV to make life easier and manageable. Also, during your dorm years learn discipline, sharing, and courtesy towards others. Learn not to throw wet towels on the bed but instead in the laundry basket. Adapting to a college life in a dorm may be difficult but it is interesting and life enriching.
