Picture the scenario. You have graduated and emerged with flying colours in your chosen field. However, there is no end in sight for your quest for a job. There are countless others in the same boat making the competition fierce and aggressive. This scenario is not entirely fiction and a reality for many. However, there is a way that can give you an edge over the countless contenders for the job if you plan. The answer to this lies in becoming an intern.

Interns do not have to look forward to glamorous salaries but they do get exposure and hands on experience in their chosen field. Most companies are willing to hire graduates but are also in favour of someone with a little experience. An intern is a boon in such cases. Becoming an intern during college is a great option as it will offer you exposure and set the tone for a job after you graduate.

The first step to becoming an intern is finding out companies of your chosen field within the vicinity of your college. You can set up an interview with the companies that interest you. Make it clear that you would be willing to intern for the company.

Most companies will only be too eager to take on an intern to save their costs. However, you need to be up front and put it out that you expect to be paid at some time in the future. It would be preferable if you could get the company to agree to a deadline after which they will hire you on a payroll. Seek the advice of your college counsellor and find out everything being an intern entails.

You can take up internship even if you are still in your high school senior year. If you are clear about field, you want to enter in after graduation you can start searching for an internship immediately. Being an intern will help you get that degree as you will be getting firsthand knowledge and education to your chosen profession. Internships are beneficial to both the companies and the interns. The companies get their work done without wages and create future candidates for their firm while the students have a chance at a job immediately after they graduate.
