Applying for a Scholarship

Applying for a Scholarship

It is a myth that only students of above average grades will be awarded with scholarships. There are many types of scholarships and the criteria of the selection process for each one is different. However, the most important thing to do is to fill out the applications for the scholarship on time with the correct information. Less than competent forms will not help you get the scholarship. A note to keep in mind is that scholarships do not have to be paid back. In this regard, they are rather like grants.

The first step is to find out which scholarships are available that interest you and fulfil your requirements. You will need to know about these well before the application submission deadline. It will allow you more time to request the forms, fill out the applications without haste and then submit. If the time frame is too short, you are likely to make errors while filling out the application thereby minimising your chance of winning the scholarship. Scholarships will have different eligibility criteria so you will have to go through the applications very carefully.

Keep a folder nearby where you have all the information that you may need to fill out the forms such as schooling, grades, test scores etc. If you think that a particular criteria does not apply to you, write N/A for not applicable instead of leaving it blank. Also, ask your parents or call up the providers of the scholarship if you have any doubts while filling the application. Applications filled in PRINT would be good, if your handwriting is an ineligible scrawl across the page.

Make copies of the application before you submit, for your reference. This helps in not filling out the same application twice. Submitting this before or on the proposed deadline is an extra caution you have to take. For if you miss the deadlines all your hard work would be futile.
